Des locataires discutent sur le pas de leur porte, un chien errant renifle le pied des murs, une vieille dame entrouvre sa croisée pour mieux surveiller sa voisine.
« Pfeeuh, se dit le piéton, c’est d’un banal à pleurer. Vivement les vacances, je partirai au delà des mers vers l’aventure. »
Inutile d’aller si loin, petit bonhomme, les sensations fortes tu peux les rencontrer ici même, au cœur de Bordeaux.
Il suffit, par exemple, de se présenter à la nuit tombante chez notre Président un soir de printemps. Et d’être prêt à tout.
« Non, non il nous faut attendre encore. Il ne fait pas assez sombre et elles ne sortent que dans l’obscurité. Nous risquons de tout gâcher. »
Nous mettons à profit ce délai pour parfaire notre équipement. Dans certaines circonstances la qualité de la préparation peut sauver la vie d’un homme. Nous portons des chaussures solides, des vêtements à toute épreuve, des lampes de poche.
La situation devient préoccupante depuis quelques semaines et je sais que si nous n’agissons pas la saison risque fort d’être compromise. Sans oublier le côté affectif, mon complice étant sensible à la mort de ses protégés. Il me confie :

Quand je pense à la joie qu’il éprouve à les voir naître, à la peine qu’il prend pour les élever, les corvées après une journée de travail pour les abreuver, je réalise quel peut être son désarroi et aussi sa volonté d’exterminer ces sales bêtes. Chacun a sa place dans le grand ordre de la nature mais certains prédateurs sont plus ignobles que d’autres.
« Tu veux boire une tisane avant de monter? » propose-t-il.
La gorge un peu serrée je décline cette offre, il nous faut y aller. L’escalier de l’immeuble déroule interminablement ses spirales. Quatrième, cinquième étage, la montée d’approche est longue. Ce sont ensuite les méandres du grenier imprégnés d’une odeur de fauve.
« C’est le chat qui pisse partout. » me précise le Président.
Une dernière porte et nous voilà à l’air libre sous les nuages porteurs de pluie. La cité, l’agitation humaine est bien loin. Le silence règne, tout au plus froissé par le battement d’ailes d’un pigeon insomniaque. Devant moi, soigneusement alignés, d’interminables rangées d’arbres colonisent les toits.
« J’en ai deux cents, rien qu’ici. » annonce mon compagnon pas fier pour un sou. Nous déplaçons maintenant les cageots de plastique qui trempent dans des bacs alimentés par l’eau de pluie. Il y a seize arbres par cageot. Certains plants sont sectionnés au ras du bois du pignon.
« Avec la lampe de poche tu devrais les repérer, j’ai l’œil, moi, maintenant. Elles laissent un filet brillant. Tiens en v’la une ! » L’homme des toits plonge la main à la surface d’un godet et remonte triomphant pincée entre le pouce et l’index, une limace.
« Ces loches sont petites mais voraces. Il ne faut pas en laisser réchapper une seule. »
Et un mini carnage s’organise. Je repère les tueuses de pins, j’appelle mon compagnon qui s’en saisit et les projette au loin sur les tuiles. Personnellement je n’aime pas trop toucher ces bestioles. Un escargot a droit a un sort différent. Il est mis de côté et plus tard sera posé sur l’appui fenêtre de la cuisine. Comme quoi il n’y a pas d’égalité en ce bas monde.
Quelques instants plus tard nous redescendons, assez satisfaits de notre chasse. Il est vrai que ces plantations ont beaucoup d’ennemis en dépit des apparences de tranquillité. Les pigeons, les souris et maintenant les limaces sur les toits et plus tard les chevreuils et les sangliers, sans compter les bipèdes négligents.
Lorsque le piéton, devenu promeneur, arpentera d’ici peu la Grande Allée, il ne se doutera pas en contemplant ces majestueux ombrages, quelles difficultés auront été surmontées.
