Une fois de plus notre Président n’avait pas résisté à l’appel de la forêt. Sa longue journée de travail assumée il avait préparé son sac de montagne, pris sa houe et quelques plants, sans oublier le bidon d’argile et s’était posté au bord de la route. Deux voitures et deux heures plus tard il était déposé à l’extrémité du chemin qui mène en deux kilomètres à la parcelle dont il entendait achever la révision. La nuit était tombée, personne à des kilomètres à la ronde. Au loin le sinistre aboi d’un chien hurlant à la mort faisait pendant au hululement de la chouette. Le vent agitait des ombres inquiétantes dans les buissons avoisinants et il lui semblait entendre des grognements suspects. Le planteur réprima un frisson nerveux, rangea son téléphone, assujettit son sac et s’appuyant lourdement sur la houe, s’enfonça dans l’obscurité.

Plus personne n’entendit parler de lui. Les appels lancés sur le téléphone portable aboutissaient à un répondeur optimiste promettant une réaction rapide. Au matin, après quelques heures d’un sommeil inquiet et ne réussissant toujours pas à établir le contact avec le Président, je me dis que les sangliers étaient nombreux dans le secteur et qu’un accident était vite arrivé. Peut-être était-il tombé dans un de ces fossés (on dit « craste ») gorgés d’eau. Bref, dès l’aube et après avoir jeté dans un sac quelques victuailles de premier secours, pris mes bottes et mon appareil photo, je me précipitais vers la voiture. Il était alors onze heures et demi.

Une heure et quart après je me garais sur la piste de terre, à l’endroit habituel, face à la mare. Un dernier essai d’appel fut sans réponse. Cela devenait franchement inquiétant. Pas un bruit alentour mais, très loin, des détonations. Sur le trajet j’avais aperçu de nombreux chasseurs en battue. Sans attendre je pénétrai dans la parcelle bien connue. Cela faisait bien huit ou dix fois que je venais là. Un soleil timide égayait une végétation morne et terne. Trois ou quatre cents mètres plus loin j’arrivai à la bande de séparation sur laquelle nous pique–niquons habituellement.
Tout de suite je vis la tente ! Je m’approchai, un grand désordre régnait dans son voisinage. Une veste chamarrée, un sac à dos vide, des épluchures de pomme tout cela signait le passage d’Yves. La tente était ouverte, j’y lançai un coup d’œil. Non, je ne remarquai qu’un sac de couchage et un numéro du Figaro Magazine. Aucune tache de sang.

Après m’être égosillé à deux ou trois reprises je me décidai à explorer les environs. Le moins que l’on pouvait dire c’est que le coin devenait touffu. Même en contournant la plantation cela tenait du parcours du combattant, entre buissons d’ajoncs et touffes de molinies. Au bout de dix minutes je découvris un deuxième indice : au pied d’un de nos pins parasols le bidon d’argile liquide et accrochée à une branche, pas une branche du pin parasol, il ne pourrait guère hélas, une branche du pin maritime contigu, une veste polaire. A nouveau je lançai un appel, en réponse je ne recueillis que le bruit du vent dans la lande. N’empêche c’était plutôt encourageant.
Deux cents mètres plus loin effectivement je distinguai une silhouette s’agiter, ce ne pouvait qu’être le Président. Je répondis à un salut lointain. Quelques instants plus tard nous nous serrions la main.

« De là-bas je croyais que tu étais un chasseur mais je ne voyais pas de fusil ! » me confia Yves, assez heureux de recevoir du renfort.
« Viens voir par ici, il faut toutes les décaniller ! »

Il m’entraîna quelques pas dans la file des arbres me désignant les multiples boules cotonneuses qui décoraient les pins : Des nids de chenilles processionnaires. Il y en avait partout. C’était une menace sérieuse pour la plantation.
Yves me fit aussitôt la démonstration de son expertise anti parasitaire : Muni de ses gants il rompit le rameau le plus proche porteur d’un nid. Il gagna le bord de la craste, déchira l’enveloppe de coton mettant à jour le grouillement des chenilles puis d’un geste déterminé jeta le tout dans l’eau noire.
« Attends, il faut maintenant les noyer ! Passe-moi la houe s’il te plait. »
Il plongea les bestioles et les maintint en profondeur sous un amas végétal.
Evidemment cela en faisait un de moins mais quand Yves me proposa de consacrer le restant de la journée à cette activité je sentis monter en moi une certaine réticence. Je fis remarquer finement que ces nuisibles en attaquant les pins maritimes étaient nos alliés puisqu’ils participaient à la mise en lumière de nos propres plantations. Cet argument paru anti-civique à mon compagnon qui derechef voulut franchir la craste pour accéder à la partie la plus excentrée de notre Allée. Il s’y prit assez mal car à cet endroit le fossé était large et profond. La botte droite s’enfonça au point que l’eau la remplit instantanément.
« Ouh, elle est glacée ! »
Quelques secondes durant j’espérais que cet incident calmerait les ardeurs destructrices de cet homme, mais non, il serra les dents, murmurant :
« Ça va se réchauffer ! »

En milieu d’après-midi la révision de la parcelle de Naujac était achevée ainsi que nombre de chenilles et le Président guère mieux.
